Laminates
is by far the toughest material, that looks like wood.
It has superior wear, pressure rating, fading, and
burn resistance. It is easy to care for and does not
requires polishing or waxing. It is great for household
with kids and pets. It is a lot less expensive and
more versatile in application, than hardwood. This
product can be used with all type of sub-floor. This
product can only be installed as a floating floor.
(Overview)
It is ideal for sub-floor with with minor problems,
cement sub-floor with minor cracks under 1/4"
which is common in Houston, and could be installed
right over linoleum. Some older homes which were built
before the 60's utilize asbestos base linoleum.
However,
there are also undesirable qualities of laminates
floors. They produce more noises from hard compound
rubber shoe, feel colder to the touch, and the are
not as glossy as hardwood. This product can not flow
continuously from one room to another if the connection
is less than four foot between them.
For instance, let say that you have a living room
with a hallway to two bedrooms. If the minimum connection
point from the living room to the hallway is less
than four foot it has to be separated by a T-molding.
If the doorways to the bed rooms are less than four
foot (which usually are), then it would also need
to be separated by a T-molding. Laminates contract
and expand due to the moisture content and it could
separate at the weakest link during its life-span.

Hardwood flooring |
Engineered hardwood
is by far the most popular product in the market today.
Most manufacture provides a 5 to 25 years finish warranty
depending on the product line and usually a lifetime
structure warranty. Some of these are pre-finished
with polyurethane which has more of a glossy finish.
Nowaday, most come with tougher finishes which utilize
aluminum oxide (the same material used in Laminates).
Engineered hard wood usually has three or more cross-ply
layer for increased stability. They are available
from 1/4" thick to 3/4" thick and widths
of 2 1/4" to 6 1/4" wide. Most are available
in Random length and the better grade are available
in Consistent length, usually 36" t0 42"
long. This product can be installed in three different
ways. Normally this product is glue directly to your
sub-floor after it is properly floated, but it can
also be nail or install as the floating method.
Direct glue down with
urethane glue is the best installation method (overview).
A properly installed floor can last a lifetime. Flooring
installed directly to concrete floor and feels like
a solid beam when walked upon. Care for this product
is very easy. It is not extremely durable, but with
proper care and use, it can last for a long long time.
Solid hardwood has been in used for hundreds of year
now. It normally comes in 3/4 inch by 2-1/2"
to 8" wide, in random lengths. Originally they
were unfinished but most manufactures now produce
a pre-finish product. This product is usually installed
over; tar & screeds or over nail down 3/4 inch
plywood. In this installation method, you home has
to be designed from the initial construction process
by recessing your sub-floor.
Many of manufactures have now re-engineered solid
wood for glue down. These products are usually micro
or beveled edge, pre-finished, and is 5/16" to
7/16" random length or 4/8" to 3/4"
in shorts. Shorts are usually 12" to 36"
long, width of 2 1/4" to 5" are the most
common.
Solid hardwood flooring materials had proven by time
to last and are still very much in demand. The best
qualities of solid wood is that it can be sanded and
refinish many times. It life span can be for hundreds
of years.
Solid hardwood is not as dimension stable as Engineered
hardwood. Over the years after it is installed each
planks has the tendency to expand or contract vertically
and horizontally in it's own way resulting in gaps
and uneven surface levels, and might have numerous
section that squeak (nail down installation) due to
it's property.
Solid 3/4" random length hardwood floors is not
recommended as an upgrade in homes that did not come
with solid wood floor. Homes that have this type of
floors were designed for it in the planning and construction
process. Most home don't have enough clearance in
door ways to accommodate this type of floor. However,
shorts or thinner solid can be used by direct glue
down. Make sure the moisture content of your sub-floor
are within range, and only Urethane based glue is
used.
A Wood floor is appealing. It produces a natural warm
felling in your home and or office. It is clean ,generally
easy to maintain, and are best-liked for people with
allergies. Please note that,
as a hardwood and laminates specialist, we don't recommended
hardwood and laminates in kitchen, wash room and bathroom
application. It looks great but, from our experience,
it is not practical. 65% of repair request from our
previous customers were water related. As an advice
there are other options like tile and natural stone.
Natural stone and
tile is by far the toughest floor covering available.
It has been in use for thousands of year now. Their
life span and durability far exceed any other type
of floor covering. We carry marble,
slate, granite,
quartzite, mosaic,
sculptures, and many
other types of stone based. We also carry polish porcelain;
which is even tougher than marble, and a large selections
of tile.
The only disadvantage in this type of flooring is
that it's quite cold on the bare foot. However, many
high-end homes incorporate radiant heating system
with this type of floor. In this application, on a
cold winter morning, when you walk on this floor you
would know that this is the best type of floor to
have.
