Design is a whole chapter
within itself. There are many factors that are involved.
If you are unsure about the choices and style that you
want to accomplish we recommend that you work with a
designer. The second thing to do is spend time looking
at home magazines and clip outs that you like. Once
you have an idea of what you are looking for, we will
assist you in finding that perfect product.
Your flooring project
will cost a substantial amount of money and we want
you to consider the type of traffic and the
type of environment your new floor will be exposed to.
Would the flooring be exposed to direct sunlight, water,
ballroom dancing, and so on?
The second step is to
find what color to choose. This process
could be a bit overwhelming, so we have a few guidelines
that should help guide you in the right direction. Lighting
is one important factor that will help you decide which
color tone to select. Remember that darker flooring
tends to absorb light and would make your home darker.
Lighter floors like natural Maple tends to reflect light
and thus brighten the area. Most people think that darker
floors make the area look smaller ,but by balancing
furniture and interior decorations with your flooring
you can create a very cozy and warm atmosphere.
Another factor
is the color of your walls and ceiling. Light
colored floors will absorb the color of your wall and
ceiling as light is reflected back and forth. One of
the most important things that you should consider is
the colors of you walls and ceilings. Make sure that
they do not conflict with your floor.
From a designer's
perspective, do not match your floor color with your
furniture. Try to go with something a few shades
darker or lighter or even better try the very opposite.
We have seen thousands of beautiful floors and hundreds
of fine pieces of furniture, but when the furniture
is the same color as your floor, there is no contrast
between the two.
To
keep the valuable space in your home from getting
too visually busy, we have a few pointers

It is a good design
rule to use only one type of floor covering in your
home, especially in homes that are open design. Sometimes
it is not practical to just stay with one flooring type
like hardwood especially in bathroom and kitchens. Just
make a note that 70% of hardwood repair requests are
water related. The last thing you want is to
make your home look choppy and small.
Imagine entering homes
where there is a patch of tile at the entry 4x6', then
it transitions into hardwood which runs down the hall
into the living room. On the right side of the entry
is the dinging room and it has carpet and directly across
the dining room is the sitting room which also has carpet.
Right wen you enter the house you can see three different
type of flooring being used. The open space has been
chopped into 4 different areas.
Homes where
a single floor covering is used seams larger than it
actually is. By using single consistent floor
covering it gives continuous flow. It appears more relaxed
and spacious.
Tile should be used
in the kitchen, laundry room, and bathroom. Wood is
great in the dining, living room, den, bed room, hall
ways and entry. Carpet is best used in bedrooms because
it is soft and warm, but not practical in high traffic
ares like hallways and dining.
